The government has taken new initiatives to prevent the erosion of the Jamuna. To this end, a project has already been undertaken in Jamalpur and Bogra districts at the initiative of the government.

Under the project, 6.250 km of river bank conservation work will be done. This initiative will save assets worth Tk 2,311 crore.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources, the project is being taken up for various reasons. The main problem and challenge of the river Jamuna is the constant changes of its channel. The river Jamuna does not form a stable and precise river bed. Every monsoon new channels are created and old channels get abandoned. Erosion of major rivers in Bangladesh is a huge problem. This has a detrimental effect on the livelihood of the people living in the riverine areas.

In addition, the general floods are beneficial for agriculture and fisheries production, but agricultural and fisheries lands are being lost due to erosion. As a result of climate change, river erosion has reached a critical level. Uncontrolled and increasing river erosion is causing damage to critical infrastructure. The damage caused by the floods has reached its peak. As a result, investment in various sectors is being hampered and the productive capacity of fertile land is being severely reduced, said a source in the Ministry of Water Resources.
