Farmers of the coastal area can cultivate the new breeds of some particular fruits including jackfruits and guavas which can be much suitable for cultivation in the coastal area of Khulna region. Cultivation of the new breeds will bring revolution in the coastal area, opined experts.

After the experiment for the last eight years, the Germplasm Center of Agro Technology Discipline of Khulna University (KU) has been successful to perpetrate the progression in the brainchild of new breeds of the particular fruits.

The Germplasm center is on the way to invent the new breeds of jackfruit, guava, pomelo, plum, sapodilla and hog palm. Among them KU jackfruit-1, KU jackfruit-2, KU guava-1, KU guava-2, KU pomelo-1, KU pomelo-2, KU pomelo-3, KU pomelo-4, KU plum -1, KU plum-2, KU sapodilla -1, KU sapodilla-2 and KU hog plum-1, KU hog plum-2 are very special.

The breeds of the fruits have been developed through experiment and achieved new landmarks and qualities and that are the fruits can endure the weather, climate and salinity of the coastal area of Khulna region as well as coastal areas of other regions.

Meanwhile, the existing breeds of the fruits are not suitable for cultivation in the coastal area. Generally, they are unable to endure the weather, climate and the extreme salinity of the coastal area of Khulna region. As a result, the production of the fruits is not adequate in the Khulna region.

In the experiment process, the good breeds among the existing breeds of the particular fruits were selected and then experiment was moving forward by analyzing the good breeds and at last it come out fruitfully.

It is expected that the new breeds of these fruits will be cultivated in the coastal area of Khulna within the next two or three years.

Dr. Md Abdul Mannan, conductor of the experiment project and professor of Agrotechnology discipline of KU, said, “The breeds which have new landmarks will be very suitable for cultivation in the coastal area of Khulna region and the breeds could also be cultivated in other district of Bangladesh”.

The fruits could be cultivated in both high and medium highland of the coastal area. As a result the farmers could easily farm the fruits through which the production would be increased and the farmers would be able to fulfill the nutrition needs of their family as well as they could increase their income by selling these fruits.

More production of these specific fruits would be possible by cultivation of the new breeds. It would be encouraged to a good number of farmer to shift to farm the new breeds of the particular fruits as the fruits brings good returns, he said.

The fruits are nutritious and very popular among the people. Moreover, there is huge demand of these fruits in the market so the farmers will be benefited by farming the new breeds of the fruits, he added.

The experiment of the particular fruits is conducted under a project of Evaluation of fruit germplasm available in the south-west region of Bangladesh on the basis of physico chemical characteristics and genetics variabilities by random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis. The experiment project have been commenced since 2010.

For cultivation of these new breeds the farmers will have to wait for two to three upcoming years because there remain some procedures to complete the experiment.
