Muzaffar given state honour

National Awami Party-NAP (Muzaffar) President Professor Muzaffar Ahmed was given state honour while his first namaj-e-janaza was held at South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad at 11 am on Saturday. Later, from the Jatiya Sangsad, his body was taken to the central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka for providing scope to people to pay their last tribute to him.

From Shaheed Minar, the body was taken to Baitul Mukarram National Mosque where his second namaj-e-janaza was held after Asr prayers, Ivy Ahmed, daughter of Prof Muzaffar told the media. Muzaffar Ahmed will be buried at Elahbad village of Debidwar upazila in Cumilla after tomorrow’s Johr prayers after his third namaj-e-janaza in the district town, she said.

The veteran politician died at Apollo Hospitals due to age-related complications on Friday. Awami League (AL) General Secretary and Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader; Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafes Osman; State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmood Chowdhury; Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Haque Shamim; Whip Atiqur Rahman Atik; Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Abdul Matin Khasru; Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology AFM Rahul Haque; Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Enterprises ASM Feroz; Joint Secretaries of AL Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif and Jahangir Kabir Nanak; Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap; President of Workers Party Rashed Khan Menon, President of Communist Party Mujahidul Islam Selim; General Secretary of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal Shirin Akhter as well as leaders and activists of different political parties and other dignitaries joined the namaj-e-janaza.

The prime minister paid homage by placing a wreath on his coffin draped with the red-green national flag at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka this morning, BSS reports. After laying the wreath, the premier stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of respect to the memory of Prof Muzaffar, also a member of the advisory council of the Mujibnagar government that led Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971. Flanked by senior leaders of the party, Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League (AL) president, placed another wreath on the coffin of Prof Muzaffar on behalf of her party, BSS reports.

AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, joint secretaries Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, organizing secretary Enamul Haque Shameem, information and research secretary Advocate Afzal Hussain, office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap and other central leaders of the party were present on the occasion.

A munajat was offered on the occasion, seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of Prof Muzaffar. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker DR Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, ministers, lawmakers and political activists joined the munajat. Later, the Prime Minister and the Speaker paid rich tributes to Prof Muzaffar Ahmed, one of the political luminaries of the country and also a member of the advisory council of the Mujibnagar government that led Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971.

Earlier around 11:00pm, the first namaz-e-janaza of the NAP president was held at South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, according to BSS.
