Md Ariful Islam Arif, an employee of a tailoring shop, was talking over phone standing beside a city mosque after offering Fazr prayer on May 8. Two hijackers -- Shaheen and Nayon – observed him from distance. On instruction from Shaheen his associate Nayon went to snatch the phone set from Arif but was held by Arif.

They started scrupling with each other. Mobs were gathering at the spot seeing the incident. At one stage, Shaheen also intervened and stabbed both Arif and his cousin Raihan, who came to the spot after the start of the scuffle, and left the scene. They were rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital at critical condition.

However, Arif succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment there. Police arrested both Shaheen and Nayon in a case filed with Kamrangirchar Police Station. Later, they gave confessional statement. Inspector Shaheen Fakir, officer-in-charge of Kamrangirchar Police Station, said, “Using technology and intelligence information, Nayon was arrested from Laxmipur area under Madaripur Sadar upazila on May 12. Shaheen was arrested from Ambagicha area under Kamrangirchar Police Station on May 15.”

On May 16, both the accused gave their confessional statements before a Dhaka Court. They admitted that they left Dhaka city for Manikganj first after stabbing Arif and Raihan. They threw the knife that was used for nabbing the duos into a paddy field in Manikganj which was used for stabbing the duos. Police later recovered the knife from the paddy field, as per their information. Nayon later hid himself in Madaripur. OC Shaheen said, “Both of the killers were addict. They killed Arif only for a phone set.”
