Nowadays rapists are not being restrained by capital punishment but so it is possible to prevent rape not only through the rule of law, but also through the movement for social change said Dhaka University Professor Emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury.
Despite the state holds the main responsibility to prevent rape, all are responsible to stop such situations, he said on Monday.
Prof Choudhury made the remarks while addressing a debate on “the pollical will to prevent rape’ at the capital’s Bangladesh Film Development Corporation on Monday.
He said, “I think accountability more important than rule of law. Because if accountability exists rule of law will prevail.”
“But public opinion is the main fact. If it can create pressure on parliament and government accountably, which is a main factor of democracy, will prevail,” he added
Prof Choudhury said, “Public opinion will be created through movement and media can play an important role here. Today, media is more powerful than it was never before.”
“If media helps create public opinion hope will prevail among people,” he added. Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury presided over the programme
The University of South Asia team won the debate competition by defeating Tejgaon College.
Professor Abu Mohammad Rais, and journalists Arifur Rahman, Nadia Sharmin, Angur Nahar Monty, and Sajeda Parveen were the judges of the competition.
