The Holy Ramadan, the lunar month of self-purification through fasting and abstinence, begins in the country today. It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar when Muslims around the world focus on prayers, fasting, giving to charity and religious devotion.

As the holy month of Ramadan has come again after a year, Muslims are meant to fast from dawn to dusk during the lunar month, a time of restraint and austerity. The month is significant as the holy Quran was revealed in this month. The whole Muslim Ummah observes the month with due religious fervor to attain self-restraint, self-rectification and forgiveness.

Fasting plays a vital role in establishing sympathy, amity and brotherhood among all, including the rich and the poor. This month brings a unique opportunity of getting closer to Allah and attaining taqwa (fear of Allah).

We hope that people would be able to realise the sanctity and significance of the holy Ramadan and reflect it in their personal and social lives and contribute to building a peaceful society. We all should be inspired with the teachings of the holy month of Ramadan and help each other in establishing peace, amity and brotherhood in personal and social lives, shunning all ills.

We all must maintain the sanctity of

the holy month of Ramadan

by showing proportion, patience

and restraint at all levels in our life

We hope that the prices of essential commodities in the country will remain steady during this holy month. Law enforcement agencies will have to conduct special drives across the country to check crimes such as snatching, robbery and extortion during this holy month. Besides, they must conduct drives against adulterated food items.

Two Dhaka city corporations and police will also have to work for freeing the city roads from any sorts of traffic congestion during the holy month of Ramadan so that people can reach their destinations well before the Iftar.

In this regard, all should also cooperate with the authorities and police for ensuring better intersections management, parking vehicles at the fixed places, stop parking in front of shopping malls and its adjoining areas, freeing footpaths from hawkers, not allowing to ply vehicles or motorcycles on footpaths. We all must maintain the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan by showing proportion, patience and restraint at all levels in our life.

The affluent section of the people should extend their helping hands for poor people of the country during the month of Ramadan. Besides, the government must take further steps to bring down prices of essentials to keep them within tolerable level of ordinary consumers.
