Heavy monsoon rains and the on rush of waters from the upstream slopes in the north east have once again flooded most of the low-lying areas in the northeast and north western parts of the country.

The fourth wave of the gushing waters from the upstream have also raised water levels in many of the rivers adjacent to the low-lying areas.

According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC), the river water level in 48 of the 101 stations under their control has increased in the past few days.

Meanwhile, the light low pressure created in the Bay of Bengal is now located in Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas of India. Monsoon winds are also active over Bangladesh. Meanwhile, latest data from the FFWC on Thursday said that all flow in all the rivers are increasing by the hours including in the Dharala, Teesta, Dudhkumar and Upper Meghna basins.

The forecast also said that water levels are expected to rise in the next 48 hours in these rivers. According to the meteorological office, it may rain all over the country as it continued on Thursday due to light low pressure and active monsoon.

Meanwhile, the water of Teesta river in Nilphamari is flowing 12 cm above the danger level. Five thousand families in 15 villages of several unions, which are surrounded by Dimla river, are at risk of flooding as the Teesta water flows over the danger level.

The executive engineer of Dalia Water Development Board, Rabiul Islam, said, “The Teesta River was flowing 12 centimeter above its red mark at Dalia point till 6 pm on Wednesday and it was flowing 20 centimeters above its danger level on Thursday morning.”

Heavy rains in Rangpur have caused waterlogging on various roads and neighborhoods of the city including alleys. The meteorological office has recorded 112 mm rainfall in Rangpur. Several of the city's busiest roads and low-lying areas have been submerged in rainwater as the city's Shyama Sundari canal and KD canal’s water have risen.

In Lalmonirhat, some 5,000 people have been marooned as the low-lying areas were inundated due to the incessant rainfall for the last two days until Thursday morning and onrush of hilly water, said deputy commissioner Abu Zafar.

The water of Sugandha and Bishkhali rivers of Jhalkathi has increased due to the effect of the low pressure and monsoon winds created in the sea. The river water has been flowing at 35 cm above the danger level since Wednesday morning. It has flooded at least 20 villages in the low-lying areas and public life has been disrupted due to continuous rain since morning.

Due to heavy rains in the last few days, the water level in Panchagarh has risen again. The lower part of Panchagarh has already started flooding. The roads are submerged. Locals said the waterlogging is due to unplanned drainage and a lack of rapid drainage system. There is knee-deep water in the low-lying areas of Panchagarh including Islambagh, Kayetpara, Ramerdanga, Rajnagar and Khalpara. Suffering has been caused due to drowning of roads.

Meanwhile, Aman crop cultivation has been delayed for about a month this year due to continuous rains in Sunamganj after three consecutive floods. Most of the crop land remain submerged and ruined in different areas due to rising water in the continuous rains. Most of the Aman fields in Tahirpur, Doarabazar and Bishwambharpur of Sunamganj are inundated due to continuous rains and rising water level for the fourth time.
