Momen meets UN chief, urges him to appoint more Bangladeshi officials

Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen held a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and discussed a range of  UN and international issues, including UN peacekeeping operations, climate change, and the Rohingya issue, were discussed in the meeting. 

Besides, the Foreign Minister requested that the Secretary-General to appoint more Bangladeshi officials to different political and military positions at the United Nations Headquarters. 

He met the UN chief on the sidelines of the 10th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in New York on Monday. 

During the discussion on peacekeeping operations, the UN Secretary-General applauded Bangladesh's significant contribution to UN peacekeeping operations. 

In response to deployed the Foreign Minister's request to recruit more Bangladeshi peacekeepers, the UN Secretary-General said that more peacekeepers, weapons, and ammunition would soon be taken from Bangladesh for various peacekeeping missions in Africa.

The UN Secretary-General conveyed the gratitude of the international community to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for providing shelter to the displaced Rohingya and for offering continued humanitarian assistance to them.

The UN Secretary-General also expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for agreeing to join the Global Crisis  Response Group to deal with the challenges of conflict in Ukraine.

In addition to the UN Secretary-General, Dr Momen held bilateral meetings with the leaders of various countries attending the NPT conference. 

Among them are Slovenia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tanja Fajon, Hungary's Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter Szijiarto, and Argentina's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Santiago Cafiero.

 Various current international issues and bilateral matters were discussed in these meetings.
