Maulana Bhashani University passes 20 years

The 20th anniversary of Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University was yesterday (October 12). In 1999 on this day, the then and current Prime Minister Desaratna Jononetri Sheikh Hasina set up the university at Santosh of Tangail to the name of oppressed leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani. The University Act was passed on 12 July of 2001 and the academic activities of commenced on 25th October in 2003. 

The university is established on 57. 95 acres of land having 15 depts. under five faculties. Currently, 5937 students are enrolled in this university, with 221 teachers, 4 officers and 313 employees. The residential facilities for the students includes Muktijoddha Abdul Mannan Hall , Alema Khatun Bhashani Hall , Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall , Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall , and Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam Hall which are in  total 5 in numbers. 

Since the establishment of the university, the situation of infrastructural development was very disappointing. Its advancement of development begins newly from stagnant position in the present government.  The first term Vice- Chancellor Prof Dr . Mohammad Alauddin, joined the university on 3rd May, 2013, amet the Chancellor  President Mr Md Abdul Hamid and the Prime Minister of the Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh, Desaratna Sheikh Hasina and placed a paper as written report with identified various problems and issues for solution on priority basis. As a result, a project titled "Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology twenty strengthening Project" – amounting BDT 345 crore 77 lakh was  approved in the National Economic Council Executive Committee (ECNEC) meeting.

 Under this authorized project, 12.74 acre of land was sanctioned. Besides this, a 12 storied academic cum research building, a 10 storied  administrative annex, upward expansion of 3rd, 4th & 5th floor of the third residential hall for the 250-students capacity, construction of 10 storied second residential hall having capacity of 700 female students,  a residential hall up to 5 floors for 450 students with base of 10 floors, a 5 storied multi-purpose building with base of 10 floors, and a 5 storied residential building for the teachers with the base of 10 floors will be constructed. 

Moreover, the project includes construction of a water filtering plant, constructions of RCC roads & culverts in the campus, RCC drain and dustbin with cover, connection of gas-lines to new establishments, purchase of furniture for the proposed buildings, scientific materials & lab-equipment, purchase of chemicals & glass wares, medical equipment, sports items & accessories, office stationaries, purchase of books & magazines for the central library, 2 buses for the students, 1 minibus & 1 micro-bus for the teachers.

It is hoped that this will bring significant changes in the infrastructural, academic & administrative facilities after the completion of the project and ensure a new environment for learning. Meanwhile, a project of Tk. 5174 lacks (amended Tk. 5690 lacks) titled “Mawlana Bhasani Science & Technology University Development” (for July, 2013- June, 2017) has been completed successfully on 30th June 2017. The project included a residency for the VC, 2nd residential hall for 250 students, 2nd residential hall for 250 female students, set-up a dormitory for the third & fourth class employees (20 Units), construction of new academic building, construction of electric sub-station, construction of university border wall, purchase of generator, and purchase of an ambulance. 

Besides, under the cluster project of “Development of Public Universities”, a development work of Tk. 37,50,00,000 has been done successfully for the period of July, 2008 to June, 2016. 

The project included construction of a library-cum-cafeteria, a residential hall (Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall) for the 400 students, a 5 storied dormitory of 30 units for the teachers & the officers, upward expansion ( 3rd & 4th floor) of 2 storied academic building.  

 The other development activities include the monument for the martyred intellectuals and construction of its premises, development of Muktomonch, construction of victory court-yard and its premises , purchase of Liason office-cum-guest house to be located at Dhaka (two flats at Shyamoli ),  launching "Liberation War and Bangabandhu Corner " at the library, and Purchase of  400 books  regarding the Liberation War, renovation and extension of " Prottoy-71", a memorial symbol in remembrance of 1971, bringing University Campus in IP cameras. 

Academic activities include  automation of the library, launching e - books & e - journals centers and set up of ICT cell, establishment of Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), establishing research cell for conducting research work by the teachers , providing internet connection, and implementation of the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) for educational quality improvement of the teachers of different departments.
