A man was killed in a gun battle with Action Battalion (RAB) in Dhaka early Sunday, who the elite force claimed was a ‘criminal’. The deceased was identified as Shaheen Bishwas alias Hanif Mia, son of Buidda Mistri from Rupganj upazila under Narayanganj district, said Mohiuddin Faruqui, Company Commander of RAB-2.

Mohiuddin told the Bangladesh Post that they set up a check post in front of National Institute of Kidney Diseases and Urology in city’s Shyamoli on Saturday night.  As part of their drive, the crime busting force were conducting search on the suspicious vehicles.

“Around 12:30 am, we intercepted a speedy CNG-run auto-rickshaw. Three passenger got down at our instruction while another ignored,” the RAB official said. At one stage, the three opened fire on RAB in a bid to escape trigging a gun battle. According to eyewitness accounts, the gun fight lasted around twenty minutes.

Hanif was caught in the line of fire sustaining bullet injuries while the others managed to escape the scene. Critically injured, Hanif was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead. RAB also seized a foreign-made pistol, six rounds of bullets for the spot. A case was filed in this connection.
