A man has reportedly committed suicide after cutting his wife's throat in Srimangal. The incident took place at Boulachhara Tea Garden in Mirzapur Union of the upazila on Saturday night.

The deceased were identified as Alka Tanto Roy, 35, and her husband Bikul Tanto Roy, 40. Police recovered the bodies of the two from the spot and sent them to the morgue.

According to the police, a quarrel took place between the husband and wife around 7 pm on Saturday. The husband committed suicide by hanging himself after slitting his wife's throat at some point during the night due to an argument.

The deceased's eldest daughter Subha Tanto Roy (12) said she was sleeping in the next room at night. When she woke up on Sunday morning, she knocked on her parents’ bedroom door and but no one opened the door. When she went in the room, she found her parents’ dead bodies.

Subha said there was no quarrel between her parents. Subha has a 6-year-old brother named Deva Tanto Roy and a 2-year-old sister named Devi Tanto Roy. These 3 children are overwhelmed with grief over the tragic deaths of their parents.

Ratna Tanta Roy, wife of deceased Bikul's elder brother, said that in the morning, when she heard Subha screaming, she went and saw Alka's body on the floor. She saw the body of his brother-in-law hanging next to Alka’s bodu. She also said that there was no quarrel between the couple.

Meanwhile, speculations have surfaced in the area on whether the husband has committed suicide by killing his wife or that it was planned murder.

Rananjit Santal, general secretary of the local Bagan Panchayat Committee, said  that wife Alka used to work as a laborer in Mirzapur Tea Garden, while her husband Bikul collects firewood from the forest and sells it in the market. He did not know of any quarrel in the family.

He said if there was a dispute, he would get a complaint as the secretary of the Panchayat committee. But no one said anything about it.

Srimangal Police Station OC Abdus Chalek said police inspected the spot and recovered a pair of bodies and sent them to the morgue. The blood-stained knife used in the killing has been recovered. The exact cause of the couple's deaths will be known after the autopsy report comes out.
