Madhumati erosion turns serious in Gopalganj

Erosion of river Madhumati at Char Pukhuria village under Paik Kandi union of Gopalganj Sadar upazila turned devastating as a large number of houses and land including a brick field is going to be washed away in the river. 

According to sources, already more than seven bighas of crop land of the village have been devoured by strong current of the river.  The devoured land include 22-decimal each of Sukur Molla and Jamsed Molla, 50-decimal of land of Freedom fighter Sabed Ali Bhuiyan, 15-decimal each of Amod Ali Molla and Hanif Molla and 11-decimal each of Aktar Molla and Motahar Fakir. 

The Modhumati Brick Industries belonged to FF Sabed Ali Bhuiyan was situated beside the river. 

While talking to Bangladesh Post FF Sabed Ali Bhuiyan said, the brick field is his only way of livelihood which is now on the verge of erosion. He mentioned, for last 15-year he has been producing bricks from his brick field named Modhumati Bricks Industry on his own land and the land he took lease from others. But, already 50-decimal of his land has been devoured by the river and the office of the brick field with surrounding land is now being threatened to be eroded any time. He said, he himself tried to check erosion by dumping bricks and pebbles but failed and informed authorities of Water Development Board of Goplaganj to take steps to check erosion of the river.  

Officials of WDB, however, already visited the erosion affected areas along the river.  FF Sabed Ali Bhuiyan with erosion affected people also met with local Member of Parliament Alhaj Dr. Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim of Gopalganj-2 constituency and sought his cooperation to check erosion of river Modhumati.  

Biswajit Baidya, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board of Gopalganj informed, already officials of WDB has visited the erosion affected area and informed the incident to concermed office in Dhaka. He hoped, the concerned authorities in Dhaka will take immediate step to check erosion of river Modhumati at Goplaganj.
