Longest bridge to connect Bhola

The government is planning to construct the country’s longest bridge from Barishal to Bhola to ease communication for the people. The bridge will be 8.64 kilometres long. The Bridge Division has prepared a primary development project proposal (PDPP) in this regard and sent it to the planning commission, sources said.

The commission has sent the proposal to Economic Relations Division (ERD) for searching fund for the construction the biggest ever bridge in the country.
The project styled ‘Construction of Barishal to Bhola over the River of the River Tetulia and Kalabadar’. The primary estimates of the project has been fixed for Tk 12,916 crore.

The ERD is communicating with some countries and donor agencies for getting fund. Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and China are in the priority list, sources said. An ERD official said construction of the country’s longest bridge will connect Barishal and Bhola districts. It is one of the mega projects of the government.

“We are searching the development partners for implementing the mega projects. We have already sent letter to the development partner countries and organizations. We hope that we would find a development partner for funding the project,” he added. According to the proposal, the project will include acquisition of 485.97 hectares of land, constructing 1.06-km approach road, 2-km link road, and 4-km river training.

Bhola is biggest island of the country. It is surrounded Laxmipur, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali and Bay of Bengal. There is no way to communicate with Bhola except water vessels. If the mega project of constructing bridge between Barishal and Bhola, it would be created job employment and developed socio economic infrastructure of the region. Dhaka would be connected with Barishal and Bhola through Padma Bridge.
