Local administration’s help sought for eco-protection

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Shahab Uddin said that he has sought the help of the local administration including the Deputy Commissioners for the protection and development of the country's environment and forests. The Minister said that he has also requested the Deputy Commissioners to take legal action against illegal brick kilns, illegal use of forest wood as fuel, prohibited polythene shopping bags, illegal hill-dune cutters, illegal saw mills, forest land and river-canal-reservoir encroachment.  The assistance of Deputy Commissioners has also been requested in noise pollution control, afforestation activities, prevention of planting of harmful trees including eucalyptus, non-settlement of forest land, prevention of illegal killing of wild animals and migratory birds, declaration of protected forests.

The environment minister said these things at the press briefing organized after the speech of the chief guest on the 1st working session of the second day of the Deputy Commissioner Conference 2023 at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.

The minister also said that to protect the ecological and environmental balance of the Sundarbans, there has been a discussion about creating alternative employment for fishermen and fishermen during the ban and taking initiatives to include social security programs. 

The cooperation of the local administration has been sought in protecting the environment and eco-system in environmentally critical areas including St. Martin, Tanguare Haure.  The Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar has been requested to take necessary steps to ensure that no new establishment is built in St. Martin Island.  The Deputy Commissioners have been requested to include the agenda related to environmental pollution control in the monthly development meeting of the district for regular discussion and resolution of local environmental problems.  The Minister said that the cooperation of all is necessary to achieve success in these matters, therefore the assistance of the Deputy Commissioners has also been sought for taking initiatives to create public awareness.

After the 1st working session of the second day, the press briefing was attended by Dr. Farhina Ahmed, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Abdul Hamid, Director General of the Department of Environment and Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Chief Conservator of the Department of Forests among others.
