Global construction materials and solutions leader LafargeHolcim will give awards to professionals who can showcase sustainable construction solutions along with architectural excellence.  It announced the sixth cycle of the international awards competition with an offer of total USD 2 million in prize money. The design competition seeks projects and concepts from architecture, engineering, urban planning, materials and construction technology, and related fields.

The competition will close on 25th February next year, said a press release.

Independent expert juries in five geographic regions of the world evaluate submissions using the comprehensive “target issues” for sustainable construction of the LafargeHolcim Foundation. The competition also promotes circular thinking and the reduction of CO2 emissions across all disciplines.

It identifies the ideas with the highest potential to tackle today’s challenges to increasing urbanization and to improve quality of life.

It may be mentioned that in 2014, Nusrat Jahan Mim from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology won the 2nd prize in the competition’s Next Generation category for Asia Pacific with a modular housing plan for the urban poor in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

In the same year and category, the 5th prize was presented to Meriem Chabani, Etienne Chobaux, and John Edom from École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture Paris Malaquais, France for an intervention plan for the Chittagong garment district in Bangladesh. In 2017, WOHA from Singapore received the 2nd prize in the main Awards category for remediating a wetland in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and floating a new university above it.

Since 2003, the LafargeHolcim Foundation has been advancing the discourse on sustainable construction mainly through these Awards, the world’s most significant competition for sustainable design. The Foundation is an initiative of the LafargeHolcim group.
