The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) on Friday gave a go-ahead to Kolkata Police to use the Eden Gardens cricket stadium as a quarantine centre for its personnel, report agencies.

After a clearance from the CAB, Kolkata Police Join Commissioner confirmed that the location has been finalised.

The quarantine centre will be set up in the coming days. The development comes amid a rapid increase in the number of coronavirus cases among Kolkata Police personnel.

This week, the coronavirus cases among the police personnel reached close to 500.

Kolkata Police had earlier written to the Cricket Association of Bengal 9CAB), requesting it to provide Eden Gardens so it could be turned into a quarantine facility.

In a letter addressed to Abhishek Dalmiya, President of CAB, Kolkata Police sought the entire stadium for free of cost.

Eden Gardens is one of the biggest stadiums in the country and is often compared to the Lords in London for its massive seating capacity.

The number of coronavirus cases in West Bengal has seen a steep rise with the registration of more than 1,000 cases in a single day.

Currently, Eden Gardens has been closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The present requirement of Kolkata Police is galleries of E, F, G, H, and I blocks to set-up the facility.
