Jute farmers see bumper yield

The jute production has revived and the farmers of the country are expecting to get a bumper yield this year.

Farmers expressed their satisfaction over the price of jute in recent years. Moreover, the demand of jute and jute products saw a huge demand at home and abroad.

Md Kaium, Assistant Purchase Officer of Popular Jute Exchange Limited, a jute warehouse in Narayanganj, told Bangladesh Post, “Farmers from Kishoreganj, Munshiganj, Madaripur and other districts are coming with raw jute to sell.”

Farmers said they are happy with the production and price of jute.

Our Jashore correspondent reported on Wednesday, “Harvesting of jute has gained momentum in all the six districts of Jashore with much enthusiasm.”

As harvesting of jute has already begun, farmers are expecting a bumper production of the fibre crop in all six districts under the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) region during the current season.

The six districts under Jashore agricultural region are Jashore, Jhenidah, Magura, Kushtia, Chuadanda and Meherpur.

Officials of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said, “Jute cultivation is increasing every year in the region as the farmers are showing interest in expanding its farming after getting repeated bumper production with excellent market price in the recent years.”

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, the government had fixed a target of producing 20, 85,910 bales of jute from 1,66,338  hectares of land for the region this season.

Of them, farmers have cultivated jute on 26,125 hectares of land in Jashore, 22,860 hectares in Jhenidah, 35,820 hectares in Magura, 40,966 hectares in Kushtia , 20,527 hectares in Chuadanga and 20,040 hectares in Meherpur districts of the region.

Additional Director of DAE in Jashore region, Zahidul Amin, said that to make the jute intensive farming programme successful, the DAE, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation, other agriculture related departments and organisations extended necessary assistance to farmers.

However, many jute farmers of the other areas of the country expressed hope to get a bumper yield and fair price this year.
