Justice over PP Habibur’s murder demanded, 19 yrs after his death

Family members and party leaders have demanded punishment for the accused in the murder case of Awami League leader PP Habibur Rahman and his brother Monir Hossain in Shariatpur.

The demand was made at a discussion meeting organized at the district Awami League office on the occasion of the 19th death anniversary of Habibur Rahman and his brother Monir Hossain at 5.30 pm on Monday.

District Awami League general secretary Anol Kumar Dey, former president Abdur Rob Munshi, vice-president and upazila council chairman Abul Hashem Tapadar, municipal mayor Rafiqul Islam Kotwal and Habibur Rahman's son Parvez Rahman Jan addressed the discussion. 

Habibur Rahman and his brother Monir Hossain were shot dead on October 5, 2001. At the time of his death, Habibur was the president of the Bar Association and the joint general secretary of the district Awami League. And his brother Monir Hossain was the organizing secretary of the municipality Juba League.

Hemayet Ullah Aurang, a former MP from Shariatpur-1 constituency, and local Awami League leaders and activists were charged with murder. The Awami League leaders said in a discussion meeting on the death anniversary of the trial of the murder case that has been stalled for 19 years, "The fact that the leader's murder has not been tried has made them apprehensive." The proceedings of the case were stalled for a long time due to the influence of the killers.'

In his speech, MP Iqbal Hossain Apu said, "If the leader's murder is not brought to justice, the activists will be scared and terrified when they go into politics." He was and will always be vocal in demanding justice for the killers of Habibur Rahman and his brother.
