Bangladesh National Awami Party (Bangladesh NAP) has demanded introduction of rationing system for workers of the country. The party called upon the government to allocate funds in the upcoming national budget for launching the rationing system for the workers.

Chairman of the party Jebel Rahman Ghaani and the party’s general secretary M Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan made the demand in a joint statement issued on Sunday (May 23).

In the statement, the two leaders said that education, health and some other sectors are identified as the most important sectors in budget allocation, but allocation for workers in the budget is not discussed properly. “Introduce rationing system for the workers considering the Covid-19 situation. Allocate funds in this sector in the upcoming budget so that the food security, healthcare, education and housing of the country’s workers are ensured,” they asked the government. They said that the budget is not only a financial plan for a defined period or a year; it is not only an estimate of income and expenditure for the period; the annual budget of the government, which is placed in the Parliament, is also mirror of the society where the government’s aims, objectives and goals are also reflected. So, the interest of the people from all walks of life, including the workers, should be reflected in the annual budget, they added.

The two NAP leaders said that the workers of Adamjee Jute Mills used to get opportunities for housing, health and education 50 years ago. “Why they are deprived of this right after 50 years? We should come forward in the interest of the livelihood of the workers,” they said in the statement.

Jebel Rahman Ghaani and Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan said that if the workers come under the rationing system, they can lead better life. A database of workers should be maintained nationally. However, along with introducing rationing system, the workers should come under life insurance service and vaccination.
