Homeless family in each village to get disaster-tolerant house

On the occasion of observing the Mujib Barsho or centennial, the government will build a weather-tolerant house for a selected family in each of the 68 thousand 39 villages in the country. Construction of each house will cost Tk 2 lakh 99 thousand 860. These houses will be constructed in the current and next fiscal year. For this, the allocation required in two years is Tk 2 thousand 40 crore 18 lakh 74 thousand 680.

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has sent a proposal to transfer Tk 899 crore 58 lakh to the construction sector of 30,000 houses, canceling the special allocation of rural infrastructure maintenance (TR) and work-for-money (Kabita) programs in the revised budget of this year (2019-20).

According to the proposal, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has decided to distribute 68,383 disaster-tolerant homes in each of the 68,383 villages in the country on the occasion of observing the ‘Mujib year’. The Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief chaired the meeting.

At the meeting, the Secretary said that already with the directive of the Prime Minister, special housing sector of the TR-KABITA program is being constructed to provide disaster relief to the poor people in rural areas and to reduce the risk of disaster. Through this the current government's election pledges, 'My Village, My City', promises to deliver modern urban facilities to every village will be fulfilled. He further said, "During the Mujib Year, a selected family in each village will be allocated a disaster-tolerant home.”

In this context, the Additional Secretary (Relief) said, “As the poverty rate in Bangladesh is gradually declining, the help of Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) will be gradually withdrawn, which will make the poor people work-oriented and establish them as self-reliant.” In this connection, the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (Budget) said, "Under the approved program issued by the Ministry of Finance on February 12 last year, the scheme is subject to circular designation, formulation, verification, modification, implementation, monitoring and evaluation procedures, in the meantime.

Similarly, in the 2019-20 revised budget of the VGF program and the budget for the 2020-21th year, proposals have to be submitted for the approval of the Prime Minister with the approval of the finance department for expenditure on construction of a disaster-tolerant house.
After a comprehensive meeting, it was decided to transfer a total of Tk 899 crore 58 lakh to each house as Taka 2 lakh 99 thousand 860 for the construction of 30 thousand houses in the revised budget of 2019-20 at the expense of development from management special activities. The finance ministry has been asked to take necessary steps in this regard.
