Highest ever Covid deaths recorded

Bangladesh registered 247 more deaths due to Covid-19 and 15,192 new cases of coronavirus infections till 8am Monday, breaking the earlier record of single-day death toll and infections. The total number of deaths has reached at 19,521 and infections at 1,179,827 with the latest figure.

This is the highest number of deaths and infections recorded in the span of a single day since March 8, when the first case of coronavirus was detected. 

The information was provided in a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday.

Although the country saw a sharp spike in Covid-19 cases in April this year, it declined significantly in May. During this time, daily infection rate came down to below 500.

However, the coronavirus situation got worsened soon and the upward trend of infection has continued since then. A strict lockdown has been going on across the country since the beginning of this month but no effective result of lockdown has been noticed so far.

On July 7, the death toll crossed 200-mark for the first time. A total of 201 people died on that day.

According to the press release, the death rate now stands at 1.65 percent in the country.

The current positivity rate stands at 29.82 percent and the overall positivity rate stands at 15.72 percent.

Among the 247 deceased, 141 were men, and 106 were women. Of the victims, 220 died in different hospitals across the country, 26 died at home and one died on the way to hospital. 

Among them 72 of the deceased were from the Dhaka division, 61 from Chattogram, 46 from Khulna, 21 from Rajshahi, 16 from Rangpur,14 from Sylhet, 12 from Barisal, and five were from Mymensingh division.

A total of 50,952 samples were tested across the country till 8am Monday.

During this period 11,052 Covid-19 patients have recovered. Up until now, a total of 1,009,975 people have recovered from the virus and the recovery rate stands at 85.60 percent.  

As of Monday, 4,178,555 people died of Covid-19 across the world and 194,985,522 have been infected so far, according to Worldometer.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh also witnessed record number of Dengue cases amid the coronavirus pandemic. A total of 123 people have been infected with dengue in the country in last 24 hours till Monday.
