It is good to note that the government has embarked on a plan to earn Tk 85,000 crore annually by exporting halal food. As reported by this daily on Sunday, work has begun to achieve this goal in the n-ext 10 years.
Potential export of halal products includes vegetables, fruits, spices, beef, fish, medicines, frozen food, frozen chicken and various products made from chicken. Experts opine that even the country exports all these products but its participation in global halal market is very low.
Global buyers do not know whether the products that Bangladesh is exporting are being produced halal or not. In this regard, the government has devised initiative to establish halal certification authority within next month.

research on halal products and
expand their horizon
Halal products have a huge demand in the global market, even in the European market because of their distinct quality. There are about 1.5 billion Muslims around the world who prefer to consume halal foods. Hence, Bangladesh can earn huge foreign currencies by exporting these halal products to different countries. In this regard, the government should devise intervention to grab the promising global market of halal products.
The government is planning to strengthen the standardisation of halal products for maintaining global standard and in order to do this the country should accelerate the halal certification process. Also there is a need to conduct adequate research on halal products and expand their horizon.
At present Bangladesh has been exporting halal meat to limited countries. It needs no emphasising that in order to boost our export growth, export of halal products can play a big role. New Zealand, Australia and Brazil are leading suppliers in halal market and we believe with necessary policy support, Bangladesh can become a giant global player in exporting halal products.
