Information Minister and Awami League (AL) Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud Friday said the government is working to register Bangla as the official language of the United Nations (UN), reports BSS.

“Today our commitment is to turn the country into ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,” he said while briefing the reporters after paying tributes to the martyrs of the historic Language Movement on the occasion of ‘Shaheed Dibash’ and the International Mother Language Day at the Central Shaheed Minar.

In reply to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s allegation that the government had established a one-party rule, Hasan said, BNP leaders specially its secretary general always talks like this. “BNP did politics only for their own interest… They always talked about the release of their leader Begum Khaleda Zia but they have no programmes for the welfare of the mass people,” he said, adding that there is no option to release Begum Zia except the legal process.

Awami League Presidium Member Abdur Rahman, Organising Secretaries– Ahmed Hossain and Advocate Afzal Hossain, Cultural Affairs Secretary Ashim Kumar Ukil, Office Secretary Barrister Biplab Barua and Deputy Publicity and Publication Secretary Aminul Islam Amin were also present, among others.
