‘Govt working to develop girl children as worthy citizens’

The government is working tirelessly to develop girl children as competent citizens and empower women to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) on time.

The observation came at a discussion arranged in observance of the National Girl Child Day-2022 with the theme 'Samoyer Ongikar: Kannyashishur Adhikar' at the Government Shishu Paribar hall room in the city on Tuesday.

With assistance of the district administration, the Department of Women Affairs organized the discussion followed by distribution of prizes among winners of different competitions arranged for girl children marking observance of the day.

Deputy Director of the Department of Women's Affairs Kawser Parveen presided over the event participated by officials, marriage registrars, religious leaders, teachers, adolescents, women rights' activists, civil society members and journalists.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Golam Rabbani attended the discussion and distributed prizes among winners of different competitions as the chief guest.

President of Press Club, Rangpur Mahabub Rahman Habu addressed the event as a special guest.

Kawser Parveen said the government has been implementing various programmes like tuition-fee free education, distribution of sub-stipends and cost-free books and appointment of more women teachers in educational institutes for the welfare of girl children.

"As a result, rights, education, nutrition and security of girl children are being ensured and they are being protecting them from dowry, child marriage and all sorts of social and family disparities and repressions for building a prosperous Bangladesh, she said.

She said the girl children are getting scope to study up to higher secondary free of tuition fees. As a result, literacy rate of girl children is rising onward and the rate of child marriage is falling across the country.

The chief guest said the government has been ensuring education, health care, rights, safety and security for girl children and stopping child marriage to bring up them as worthy citizens and achieve the SDGs to build a developed Bangladesh by 2041 next.
