In a bid to ensure unfailing security for all, the government is going to strengthen the security network at grassroots level across the country with an active public involvement in the process, home ministry sources said. Apart from strengthening security, it will also embark on a nationwide programme to create awareness of safety and security.

Different law enforcement agencies including police and other relevant agencies would be augmented and strengthened to make the safety and security initiative more effective, sources said. “We want Bangladesh to become one of the safest nations in the world,” an official of the home ministry said. Earlier, the government formed committees, headed by the deputy commissioners and upazila nirbahi officers at their respective districts and upazilas in order to build a crime-free society through improving law and order situation everywhere in the country.

Though the committees have been asked to hold monthly meeting in order to discuss the prevailing law and order situation in the district and upazila levels, but these committees are not doing so, sources said. The lawmakers at their respective constituencies have been made chief advisors to the committee. But they are also reluctant to carry out their responsibilities due to what they usually say ‘busy with other work’.

As a result most of times, they did not attend the meeting to discuss the prevailing law and order situation in the district. Earlier, the government formed committees, headed by the deputy commissioners and upazila nirbahi officers to control law and order at root level across the country. Besides, the committees have also been asked to monitor the overall law and order situation across the country.

As per rules, the committee will monitor and supervise the implementation of the directives given by Home Ministry to ensure law and order The committees have also been assigned to monitor and review the operations of determining the immediate tasks related to law and order identified by various law enforcement agencies for ensuring security of the people.

According to the sources, there was no meeting over law and order situation in the last six months. As the lawmakers, deputy commissioners, upazila nirbahi officers and officials concerned are reluctant to hold meeting on law and order, the home ministry expressed dissatisfaction, asking them to continue holding meeting on law and order situation.
