The cabinet committee on government purchase has approved procurement of 80,000 tonnes of urea fertiliser form Saudi Arabia, Qatar and KarnaphuliFertiliser Company Ltd. (KAFCO).
The procurement will cost the exchequer Tk 1.75 billion.
The approval came at a virtual meeting of the committee on Wednesday. Law minister AnisulHuq presided over the meeting in absence of finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, cabinet division additional secretary Dr Abu SalehMostafa Kamal said that of the total purchase, 25,000 tonnes of bulk granular urea fertiliser will be procured from Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) at a cost of Tk 556 million.
And 25,000 tonnes of bulk prilled granular urea fertiliser will be purchased from Qatar Chemical and Petrochemical Marketing and Distribution Company (Muntajat) at a cost of Tk 555 million.
The approval also includes purchase of 30,000 tonnes of bagged granular urea fertiliser from KAFCO at a cost of Tk 635 million.
The other proposals which got approval include procurement of gas oil, Jet A-1, furnace oil, octane and marine fuel oil.
Besides, three proposals relating to the procurement of conductor, ACSR, bare, and underground cable for Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board for the expansion of distribution network were approved at the meeting. The committee also approved a proposal of the secondary and higher education division for printing, binding, and supply of 465,535 copies of books.
Earlier in the day, the cabinet committee on economic affairs approved the collection of 300,000 pieces of household silo under direct purchase method.
These pots will be distributed among the poor, underprivileged, and people in disaster-prone areas for storing foods safely.
The economic affairs committee also approved procurement of 1,000 tonnes of printing paper under direct purchase method.
