Following developed countries like USA and China, the government is trying to acquire expertise in controlling social media especially the Facebook and YouTube to prevent falsehood, hatred, rumor etc. on the social media platform. Nowadays, religious extremists and anti-state elements have been using the social media platform to create unrest and to make gain from the instable situation.

However, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar on Sunday told Bangladesh Post that the government already has achieved technical expertise to prevent spreading of propaganda, hatred and rumors on social media, especially on Facebook and YouTube.

Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar told Bangladesh Post, “We have successfully achieved our technical expertise to monitor and control the social media. In the meantime, the necessary equipment has already been installed.” “Beside technical expertise, we also have to create mass awareness among the people. Once we are successful in creating awareness, we will be hundred percent successful in tackling social platform rumors against the government as well as religion,” said the minister on Sunday.

Religious extremists and militants are always using religion as their weapon. The government is working continuously to prevent them, the minister added. Using the social media platform, a vested quarter is spreading propaganda against the government and trying to create unrest in the country.

Opposition political parties including Jamaat-Shibir and some militant groups are always active in the social sites to take advantages of anything especially from religious sentiment. To tackle such situation, the government is now ready to tackle any kind of untoward situation.

Earlier, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar had said the government is set to control social media sites such as Facebook and YouTube to contain the spread of rumours in social media. The crisis the government faces is that it cannot take immediate steps to control posts and videos posted on social media. However, the government has acquired the ability to control any website before the last national election.

According to Post and Telecommunication ministry information, it was learned that, the government cannot intervene any content uploaded on social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, because these have to comply with the 'American Community Standard’. However, this issue is scheduled to overcome this year when the government will have the power to intervene directly.
