Govt to import 10.30lakh tonnes petroleum oil by June

Bangladesh is going to import 10 lakh 30 thousand metric tonnes of petroleum oil through government to government (G to G) initiative from China, Thailand, Indonesia, United State Emirate (UAE) and Malaysia.

The Cabinet Committee on public purchase on Thursday approved a proposal to allow the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) to import the bulk petroleum. The meeting was held at National Economic Council (NEC) auditorium at Sher-e-Bangla Nagor in the capital.

According to official sources, the government will spend taka 5,142.51 crore to import the petroleum oil from January to June this year from six state-owned companies namely Petrochina of China, PTTT of Thailand, BSP Zapin of Indonesia, UNIPEC of China, ENOC of UAE and PTLCL of Malaysia

The committee also approved that, the BPC could import 50 percent of total demand of oil by G to G and rest of 50 percent oil through international open tendering in 2020.

Officials said BPC will import 20 lakh 90 thousand metric tonnes fuel oil within December. Of these the Committee has approved 10 lakh 30 thousand oil on Thursday.

The meeting approved the other proposal also from the BPC to procure some 60,000 metric tons of gas oil from Numaligar Refinery Limited of India for the period of January to December of this year at a cost of Taka 314.30 crore.

Among others, Prime Minister’s Energy Advisor Tawfiq-E-Elahi Chowdhury, State Minister for Power Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, Additional Secretary of Cabinet Division Nasima Begum  were present in the meeting Chaired by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.
