Govt to build first-ever heliport

The government is going to build the country’s first-ever heliport and has already identified a suitable location for the infrastructure, a senior official says.

A committee has been formed under the supervision of the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry to carry out the ancillary works, Senior Secretary to the civil aviation and tourism ministry Md Muhibul Haque said on Wednesday.

The body would report at the earliest, followed a formal announcement on the construction of heliport, he added.
A heliport or rotor station is an area of land, water, or structure used or intended to be used for the landing and takeoff of helicopters, and includes its buildings and facilities. In other words, it is a small airport suitable for use by helicopters and some other vertical lift platforms.

The senior secretary made the remarks while addressing a webinar titled “Tourism: A Penalty Shoot for the Economy of Bangladesh” jointly organized by Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC), Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry, and travel magazine ‘Vromon’.

Muhibul Haque said, “As per Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s directives the civil aviation and tourism ministry is working on it. We except to get a report as early as possible and further progress will continue then”.

He further said, “Work is underway to formulate a policy for the development of the country’s tourism. It will specify the responsibilities of each ministry involving in tourism to help them play their parts properly.

“Development of tourism requires joint initiative of government and non-government bodies. To achieve the desired progress in tourism is not possible without integrated initiatives”, he added.

The senior officials also thanked the home ministry and the tourist police for their playing their parts to ensure security to tourist destinations across the country.

BPC Chairman Ram Chandra Das presided over the webinar while editor of travel magazine ‘Vromon’ Abu Sufiyan conducted the event.

Bangladesh Tourism Board’s CEO Jabed Ahmed, Bangladesh Tourist Police’s SP Arifur Rahman, Global Television CEO Nawazish Ali Khan, TOAB president Md Rafiquzzaman, Aviation Operators Association of Bangladesh General Secretary Mofizur Rahman, among other, were present on the occasion.
