Govt takes plan to widen Dhaka- Aricha Highway into four-lane

RHD knocks down over 3,000 illegal structures in Savar, stack of destruction sends new message to grabbers

A huge number of illegal structures including a lot of high rise buildings were demolished by the authorities of Roads and Highway Department (RHD) through mobile court drives.

The government has taken initiative to widening the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in four lanes. So, the RHD authorities conduct this eviction drive on both side of highway from Aminbazar to Nabinagar area to relieve the highway. 

Till now, more than three thousand illegal structures were demolished in this drive. The structures were constructed grabbing government and highway’s land. However, the stack of destruction now showing new message so that no illegal establishment of any power is permanent. 

Mahbubur Rahman Faruki, joint secretary of Road Transport and Bridges Ministry, told The Bangladesh Post that the installations were not built in a single day. “The eviction drive sends a message to the whose who illegally set up structures by occupying highways land by using their illegal power. I think, they should be conscious that nothing is bigger than interests of people and country,” he said. 

More than three thousand illegal structures have been demolished on both side of Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar from Aminbazar to Savar Bazar Bus Stand area in last few days. Some of these are industrial space, shopping mall, multistoried building, wholesale vegetable market, various kind of shop which was definitely set up by powerful men. Now this time, it seems like a war-torn area after the continues operation by RHD in last few days.

Md Salauddin Khan Noim, General Secretary of Savar Nagorik Committee, said, “This is really a great initiative of government and the related department. We welcome this initiative.”

Locals said that most of those structures, which was demolished in during eviction drive, were business spot such vegetable market, various kind of shop. Some influential people installed those structures and collected a lot of money from those place as rent. Even, sometimes they collect big amount of money from those place as position advance. Hazi Abdul Gani, Mayor of Savar Municipality told The Bangladesh Post, “The Awami League government always work to change the destiny of people. I welcomed this drive and the initiative of government to widening the Dhaka-Aricha Highway from two to four lanes.”
