Govt gives priority to social safety: Nuruzzaman

Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed on Thursday said the government has given priority to ensure social safety for building a hunger and poverty free Bangladesh. “The incumbent government under the pragmatic leadership of Premier Sheikh Hasina is working relentlessly by adopting various social welfare-based programmes and projects to build a hunger and poverty free Bangladesh,” he said, reports BSS.

The minister said this while addressing the 45th meeting of Bangladesh National Social Welfare Council in city’s Eskaton area. It was informed at the meeting that a total of taka 50 crores will be provided for human resources development, assistance for the treatment of the disabled and helpless patients, skill development of the convicted criminals and their rehabilitation, grants to social volunteer’s organizations and rehabilitation of river-erosion affected people and poor and meritorious students.

Besides, the housing for tea laborers will be set up on pilot basis by spending taka 2 crores in Moulvi Bazar, Habiganj and Sylhet districts during the current fiscal year for the betterment of the tea garden workers. Social Welfare Ministry senior secretary Zuena Aziz, Bangladesh Insurance Association chairman Sheikh Kabir Hossain, Bangladesh Social Welfare Council Executive Secretary ATM Nashir Mia and members of the council were present at the meeting.
