It is alarming news that the previous predictions of raise in world temperature by 1.5 degrees Celsius may actually not take place, instead it is heading for a 3 degree Celsius rise as reported by this daily on Wednesday. The report says that the rise of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen to 415.50 parts per million (PPM) and this has raised 15 ppm in just three years.

This raise in temperature is no mere feat; this is going to mean change in weather, shifts in biomes and probable extinctions occurring throughout ecosystems and habitats. Such is the case with Bangladesh too. The threat to coastal communities is catastrophic, but no matter how sinister, menacing and threatening adjectives are used to describe the seriousness of the situation, the world leaders are still failing to pay any heed to this urgent matter.

The sea level

rise is the most terrifying

disaster that can befall

 Bangladesh at this time

The ice caps have already contributed to a huge rise in sea level and in eighty years, by 2100, the water level will rise more than a foot. To counter this problem Bangladesh needs an estimated USD 70 billion within 2030 to reduce carbon dioxide emission and to take measures to moderate the scenario.

Recent reports from local experts say that the sea level rise is the most terrifying disaster that can befall Bangladesh at this time. The global rise in temperature thus has to be tackled in a planned manner so that this can be prevented. The authorities concerned should work together in formulating an international committee which will take charge and nip this serious problem in the bud before it’s too late. It suffices to say that the climate change problem cannot be handled by any country alone and thus a coalition must be formed. The sooner the world leaders understand this the better.
