The importance of fruits in meeting the daily vitamin and nutrient requirements cannot be stressed enough. Considering the abundance of fertile land, the government wants to emphasize the cultivation of both local and foreign fruits.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have urged people to plant more fruit trees across the country to meet the demand of food and nutrition, and attain economic self-reliance. They made the call on Saturday in separate messages on the occasion of "Fruit Tree Planting Fortnight" from June 16 to 30, and "National Fruit Fair" from June 16 to 18.

Terming this year’s theme of the "Fruit Tree Planting Fortnight" and "National Fruit Fair" as time-befitting, both the president, and the prime minister wished success of all programs marking the occasion, and hoped that those programs would create awareness among the people.

dehydration in adults  and children alike

The government hopes to generate huge employment opportunities with increasing production of fruits, as well as to maintain environmental balance by expanding the farming of local varieties of fruits in a planned way across the country. The government also wants to see an increase in the cultivation of foreign fruits as there is an increased demand for them in our country.

Especially, in summer, fruits play a pivotal part in satiating hunger and preventing dehydration in adults and children alike. Summer fruits are a big part of our national culture. Particularly, for the lower classes, fruits are a very easy to access source of nutrition. However, in recent years the prices of many fruits have gone up. Increased production will surely help keep prices of fruits down.

Due to our fertile soil and tropical climate, Bangladesh has many fruit varieties which are unique to the country. There is a huge demand for these fruits abroad and the export of fruits from Bangladesh has risen significantly in the last few years. This has greatly contributed to our revenue as well.

The government should subsidize the production of fruits in rural areas in order to boost the production of fruits. Information on the health and nutritional benefits should also be spread across the country in order to solve the problem of poor nutrition in Bangladesh.
