Flood situation in the country’s middle districts may deteriorate for a few more days from today as the water level of Padma River is swelling up.

According to the latest report of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of Water Development Board (WDB), unveiled on Saturday the middle region of the country situated at Ganga-Padma basin might witness the degradation of floods.

Due to the rising of water level in this river, the flood situation in Manikganj, Rajbari, Faridpur, and Munshiganj districts will worsen today. However, the flood condition in the north-east and other areas were now improving, the report said.

According to the report, due to the going down of water level of the two major rivers, Brahmaputra and Jamuna, the flood situation in Sylhet, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Netrokona, Sunamganj, Jamalpur and Bogura districts will improve further today and continue for a few days.

In the WDB report it was said that except Ganga-Padma and some adjacent rivers to Dhaka, the water level of all the rivers of the country might go down today.

Executive engineer of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of WDB Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan told media that water level at Sureshwar point of the Padma River might flow over the danger level today worsening the flood situation in the median districts for a couple of days more.

However, the flood situation in all north-east districts would improve today and the momentum would continue, he said.

According to Met office report, due to heavier downpour in the country and its upstream basin (Assam province of India) in the 2nd week of the current month, the water levels of most of the country’s major rivers swelled up, causing floods in many districts at the beginning of 3rd week of the month.

The water levels at all points of Brahmaputra and Jamuna crossed the danger level, causing floods in Jamalpur, Kurigram, and Gaibandha districts and it later extended to Bogura, Sirajganj, Tangail, and Manikganj districts.

According to WDB sources, the water level at Bahadurbad and Fulchari points of Jamuna, and Dalia point of Tista rivers crossed the record danger level this year.

Later, the water flow in Padma River swelled up and caused floods in the median regions of the country, causing immense public sufferings.
