Flood pushes up vegetable prices

Due to the worsening flood situation across the country, the price of almost all vegetables and sugar have gone up while the prices of onion, egg, and fish remain stable. At the capital’s different kitchen market, onion was found selling between Tk 32 and 34 per kilogram (kg), which was Tk 36-38 last week. Per dozen egg was selling at Tk 90-95, sugar is selling at Tk 54 per kg which was Tk 50-52 past week. Green chili price has gone beyond expectations. It is selling at Tk 180-200 per kg.

As the country, mostly in the northern regions, is experiencing severe flooding, most of the crops have been submerged. As a result, vegetable prices have suddenly shot up, said vegetable traders of Karwan Bazar kitchen market - one of the biggest and busiest in town. Customers otherwise are claiming a different reason for the price hike of groceries. They said that due to a lack of surveillance of the authority concerned, the price of essential items has suddenly gone up. Similar voices were raised at the capital’s Rampura and Malibagh kitchen markets.

In the vegetable market, papaya is selling at Tk 40, cucumber between Tk 80 and 120, carrot at Tk 100, tomato between Tk 30 and 40 per kilogram while lemon cost between Tk 20-40 (four pieces), brinjal cost Tk 50-60, bitter gourd sold at Tk 50, okra at Tk 50, gourd Tk 50-60, and potato is Tk 20-22 per kg. Karwan Bazar vegetable trader Ibrahim said that due to flood, vegetable supply is not as much as it should be as a result prices of many of the vegetable items have shot up.
In the meat market, beef and mutton were selling at Tk 550-570 per kg and Tk 750per kg respectively while broiler chicken was selling at Tk 130 a kg, red layer chicken and Pakistani chicken are selling at the same price, at Tk 180-220.

During visits to the fish market in Rampura, it was found that the prices did not fluctuate much. Chital fish was selling at Tk 500-550 per kg, Awn fish at Tk 650-700, Rohi is at Tk 280-350 per kg, Katla at Tk 300-350, tilapia sold at Tk 140-160, Boal fish at Tk 700-900, Pangasius sold at Tk 150-180, Pabda sold at Tk 500, and Shing sold at Tk 400-600.
