Flood inflicts suffering on Tangail people

Roads and houses in low-lying areas are being submerged due to rising water in the rivers adjacent to Tangail. The submerged area is increasing every day. As a result, millions of people in these areas are in dire straits. On the other hand, more than 3,500 crop pieces of land has been submerged. The farmers are facing extreme financial losses.

The water of Jamuna, Dhaleshwari and Jhenai rivers has been flowing over the danger levels for the last week. According to the District Water Development Board, the water level in the Jamuna River was 35 cm. upstairs. 

Besides, the water flow of Dhaleshwari was 90 cm above the danger level and the water flow of Jhenai river was 48 cm above the danger level.

According to sources, out of 12 upazilas of the district, about 146 sq km area of 6 upazilas has been flooded. Nagarpur and Kalihati upazilas of the district are mostly at risk of erosion due to rising river water. Besides, water has entered some areas of Tangail Sadar, Bhuapur, Gopalpur and Delduar upazilas and caused sufferings to the locals. Water has entered at least 101 villages in 21 unions of these upazilas. 

As a result, more than 1 lakh 24 thousand people in all these areas have become waterlogged. More than one and a half thousand raw houses have been submerged in water. 

According to District Agriculture Extension Department sources, already Tangail Sadar, Basail, Kalihati, Bhinapur, Mirzapur, Nagarpur of the district are floode. About 3,643 hectares of crop land in these 6 upazilas of Delduar has been submerged in water.

District Agriculture Extension Department (Khamarbari) Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Shariful Islam said 992 hectares of roped amon, 9 hectares of transplanted amon seedbeds, 48 hectares of jute, 696 hectares of aus rice, 1222 hectares of sesame and 216 hectares of vegetable fields have been submerged in six upazilas due to rising river water in the last few days. 

If the water downs within one to one and a half weeks, it will be possible to recover about 70-80 percent of these crops. Meanwhile, Sirajul Islam, executive engineer of the district water development board, said, "The flood situation in Tangail is deteriorating. 

In the last few days, water has been continuously flowing above the danger level. This may likely to increase sharply by next week. The condition of Nagarpur and Kalihati upazilas is the worst among the 8 upazilas where water has increased in 12 upazilas of the district. Especially in Nagarpur, the Chowhali part of the border Sirajganj is on the verge of disappearing. 

Besides, the area of Nagarpur is also facing massive erosion. It is not possible to prevent erosion with temporary maintenance. Besides, work is underway to prevent erosion in different parts of Bhainapur area including Balarampur. 

Meanwhile, the residents of the flood-hit areas are at health risk. There has been a crisis of pure water as tube wells and pressure mills have been submerged.
