A vast area of Madhabpur of the district inundated today as bank of Sonai River washed away following flash flood triggered by heavy rain and surge of water from hills, reports BSS. Many areas of the town went under knee water and many roads were submerged causing trouble to communication and movement of home bound people during Eid.

The situation aggravated when a portion of the east bank of Sonai River collapsed Saturday morning following incessant rain.More than fifty villages and a vast land of crops and vegetables were submerged while many ponds and fish farms completely washed away in the flood.Most-affected villages are- Alabongpur, Bahara, Kashimpur, Belapur, Mohanpur, Mongalpur, Kamalapur, Krishnapur, Sreedharpur and Montala.

The flash flood also caused water logging at different areas of Habiganj town submerging many schools, markets and residential areas.Head teacher of Aparupa High School said flash flood inundated school floor damaging furniture and building. Local people said unplanned development work and siltation of the Khoyi River and illegal grabbing of ponds and drains aggravated the water logging problem.

General Secretary of Habiganj Paribesh Andolon Tofazzal Hossain said people of the town for long time have been suffering from water logging caused by illegal grabbing of the Khoyi River and unplanned drainage system.Demands of the civil society members for excavation of the Khoyi have long been ignored despite regular demonstration to resolve the problem, he said.
