Essentials get pricier

    Unwanted rain is causing severe damage to the crops and vegetables. As a result, prices of vegetables and others have witnessed a hike for the past few days.  

Traders while showing rain and other causes for hiking groceries prices, buyers are saying that traders are always looking for opportunities to hike the product prices.  

Visiting the capital’s different kitchen markets on Friday such scenario of variation on prices essentials was found.      

Eggplant is being sold at Tk 100 per kilogram (kg), radish Tk 60 per kg, cucumber is Tk 70 per kg, bitter gourd Tk 80 per kg, okra is Tk 60 per kg, pointed gourd is Tk 60 per kg, Tomato is Tk 120, benas Tk 160, Papaya Tk 30, snake gourd Tk 60, yard long bean is being sold at Tk 80 per kg. 

On the other hand, gourd is selling at Tk 60 per piece, cabbage and cauliflower at Tk 50 per piece, pumpkin at Tk 40 per piece. 

As per traders’ information, due to unwanted rain crops and vegetables are damaging. On the other hand, supply is lower against the demand. As a result prices of all vegetables have gone up.  Not only vegetables, the prices of rice and eggs are also high in the market. 

The price of coarse and fine rice has increased by Tk 2 to Tk 3 per kg. In the span of a week sorna rice price has increased by Tk 2 per kg to Tk 50-52 and BR-28 is selling at Tk 60 to Tk62. But earlier, the price of fine sarna was Tk 48 to Tk 50 and BR-28 was Tk 58 to Tk 60 per kg.  

Besides, Miniket and Nazirshail rice varieties are being sold at higher prices than before. These varieties are being sold at Tk 70 to Tk 84 per kg , depending on the quality. 

On the other hand, in the span of three days, eggs have increased from Tk 130 per dozen in the retail market and are now being sold at Tk 150. At retail, four pieces of eggs are being sold at Tk 50. 

Meanwhile, the prices of grocery products remain stable. The price of palm oil is being sold at Tk 140 with a drop of Tk 5 only in retail. However, the price of any other bottled edible oil has not decreased.

Despite adequate supply of hilsa fish, it still remains out of the reach of common people. A kg of hilsa is selling at Tk 100 while 1200 gram to 1300 gram hilsa is selling at Tk 1300 per kg while 1500 gram of higher weighted hilsa is selling at Tk 1500 of above.
