Erfan Selim suspended from councilor post


Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Ministry has suspended Erfan Selim from the post of councilor as he was sentenced to one year in prison by a mobile court. 

A gazette notification in this regard was issued on Tuesday afternoon.

The gazette added that, a case was filed against Erfan Selim for possessing arms and narcotics, assaulting Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan of Bangladesh Navy. On the charge of crime and misconduct, Efran Selim has to be suspended from the post of elected councilor of Dhaka South City Corporation's general ward 30 as per the powers given under 12 sub-section (1) of the Local Government Act, 2009.

Helaluddin Ahmed, senior secretary to the local government department of the LGRD Ministry, earlier said, “We will take action against councilor Erfan Selim when we will receive a report from the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) about his conviction”.

The secretary added the Local Government City Corporation Act states that if a person is convicted by any court, he will be dismissed from his post.

Erfan Selim is the No 30 ward councilor of Dhaka South City Corporation.

RAB detained Erfan from his father’s residence at Devdas Lane of Swarighat in Old Dhaka on Monday afternoon following a case filed with Dhanmondi Police Station by Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan of Bangladesh Navy for assaulting him.

A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Monday sentenced Erfan Selim and his bodyguard Zahid to one year in jail for possessing illegal walkie-talkies and liquor.

Two firearms, 38 walkie-talkies and liquor were recovered from the house during the drive.
