BSS, Dhaka

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq on Sunday said an equitable legal framework is essential for sustainable development of any country.

“...and that is why the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken different initiatives including formulation of non-discriminatory law for implementing goal 16 (B) of the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN,” he said at a workshop on legislative research at Hotel Sonargaon in the capital.

Organized by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division, the workshop was presided over by its Secretary Md Moinul Kabir. Law and Justice Division Secretary Md Golam Sarwar, joint secretary Md Hafiz Ahmed Chowdhury and project director Dr Mohammad Mohiuddin addressed the function, among others.

The law minister at the workshop also said the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division is playing a key role in implementing goal 16 (B) of the SDGs and as part of that, a project has been taken to identify and amend laws and policies with disparity.

“The law faculties of Dhaka, Chittagong and Rajshahi and BRAC universities have been given the responsibilities to conduct research to identify whether there are any discriminatory provisions in total 1,286 acts formulated since 1799 to 2020. The university authorities have presented their findings today,” Anisul Huq further said.

The minister added that the universities authorities have presented a couple of recommendations and the law ministry would analyse these to bring necessary reform to the concerned acts.
