Enhancing capabilities of village courts stressed

Government officials at inaugural function of a training course Friday stressed on enhancing capabilities of the people involved with conducting activities of village courts to quickly resolve local disputes, reports BSS.

The district administration organised the two-day refreshers’ training course on ‘Village Court’ for union parisahd secretaries and village court assistants of 14 union parishads at conference room of Learning and Resource Centre in the city.

The event is being arranged with assistance of the Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh (second phase) project.

The Local Government Division is implementing the project with financial assistance of European Union and UNDP.

Deputy Commissioner Enamul Habib attended the function as the chief guest with Deputy Director (Local Government) Syed Farhad Hossain in the chair.

District Facilitator of the project Md. Matiur Rahman narrated goals of the project that aims to further strengthening activities of village courts in reaching justice easily to the rural poor at their doorsteps.

He discussed laws and rules related to village courts, procedures of conducting its activities and ways for further strengthening activities of village courts to make those people-friendly and popular among common people.“The proejct is currently being implemented in 41 unions of Sadar, Kawnia, Taraganj, Badaragnja and Pirganj upazials of Rangpur in the second pahse,” Matiur added.

The participants narrated field level experiences in running activities of village courts and prevailing challenges with suggestions for further strengthening of village courts. The chief guest stressed on informing public about benefits of village courts those are capable of resolving minor disputes and conflicts amicably without knocking doors of district level lower courts or police stations.

He suggested the participants to acquire knowledge from the training to enhance their capabilities for smoothly running activities of village courts to resolve minor disputes and conflicts locally and reduce pressure of cases on lower courts.
