DSE investors lose Tk 3,696cr last week

The market capitalization of the prime bourse declined by Tk 3,696.92 crore to stand at Tk765,591.91 crore in the last week.

Market analysts caution investors were busy selling their securities to liquidate their positions as the price of shares continued to reduce for the last several months, pushing the market down.

Stocks witnessed the losing streak amid a confidence crisis stemming from worries about the weakening macroeconomic situation coupled with rising inflation, they added.

The inflation rate rose to 8.78 percent in February against 8.57 percent in January ahead of the holy Ramadan that created a negative sentiment to the investors, they added.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went down by 39.93 points or 0.64 percent to close at 6,220.24 after gaining 46.4 points in the previous week.

However, the DS30 Index, comprising blue-chip companies, declined by 8.21 points to close at 2,218 and the DSEX Index went down by 5.48 points to finish at 1,356.

Last week’s total turnover amounted to Tk 25.40 billion, slightly down from Tk 25.85 billion in the previous week.

The average daily turnover witnessed a losing trend to stand at Tk 5.08 billion, down 21 percent as against Tk 5.68 billion in the week before.

As 378 issues traded, 15 advanced, 141 declined and 222 remained unchanged on the DSE.

The low-cap IT sector dominated the turnover chart, taking almost 19 percent of the week's total turnover.

It was followed by life insurance (16 percent) and pharmaceuticals (12 percent).

Rupali Life Insurance became in the week's turnover leader with shares worth Tk 1.45 billion changing hands.

It was followed by Genex Infosys, Sea Pearl Beach Resorts andMeghna Life Insurance.

Al-Haj Textile was the week's top gainer, rising 11.86 percent while Bangladesh General Insurance was the worst loser, losing 15.97 percent.

On the other hand, the port city bourse, the Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE) also saw a rapid fall with its selective category index (CSCX) losing 58 points during the last week to close at 11,001points on Thursday.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also ended lower with the CSE All Share Price Index (CASPI) losing 98 points to settle at 18,352 and its Selective Categories Index (CSCX) shedding 58 points to close the week at 11,001.

The All-Share Price Index of the CSE was lower by 98 points during the time to close at 18,352 points on Thursday.

Of the 266 issues traded, 83 declined, 18 advanced and 165 remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city's bourse traded 10.34 million shares and mutual fund units with turnover value of Tk57.13crore.
