Drug trader killed in Kushtia gunfight

A suspected drug trader was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Horra area under Kushtia Sadar upazila on Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam, 40, son of late Mohon Ali of Haripur village of the upazila.

“Acting on a tip-off, a police team went to the area around 1am when they came to know that a group of drug traders were gathering there,” Sensing their presence, drug traders opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back that triggered a gunfight, leaving Rafiqul injured, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kushtia Model Police Station, Nasir Uddin said.

Later, police recovered him from the spot and sent to Kushtia General Hospital where on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Three policemen were injured during the gunfight.

Police also recovered a pistol, two bullets and 380 pieces of Yaba tablets from the spot, the OC added.
