DNCC considers for slum dwellers’ dormitories

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Monday suggested for building dormitories to solve the housing crisis of slum dwellers. The mayor came up with the proposal while speaking at a workshop titled ‘Livelihoods Improvement of Urban Poor Communities (LIUPC)’ jointly organised by DNCC, Power and Participation Research Center (PPRC) and IPE global at Nagar Bhaban in capital’s Gulshan.

“There are several positive initiatives to improve the livelihood of slum dwellers. Thought, many challenges also remain there, we may construct dormitories for them to solve their accommodation problem”, said the DNCC Mayor. Mayor Atiqul said, “It is very important to prepare a slum database to formulate a proper plan to provide citizen services in the slums. Apart from this, we can construct infrastructures, including roads and drains in slum areas through discussion among concern authorities.”

Executive Chairman of the Power and Participation Research Center (PPRC) Hossain Zillur Rahman presided over the workshop. The programme was funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The role of the DNCC to improve living standard of the slum dwellers under was discussed in the workshop.

DNCC Executive Officer Md Abdul Hai, Secretary Rabindra Shri Barua, Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Mominur Rahman Mamun, DNCC’s councilors and various NGO representatives, among others, were present in the workshop.
