Shakespeare's famous play 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' has been staged in the production of the English Department of Dhaka International University (DIU).
In the history of Dhaka International University, for the first time a full play has been staged on Sunday at 5.30 pm in the University Auditorium.
Prof. Dr. Ganesh Chandra, Saha,Pro-Vice-Chancellor, regirstrar Professor Md. Rafiqul Islam, additional registrar professor Mohammad Shah Alam Chowdhury, Professor Sazzad Hossain, Department English, and other respected chairmen and teachers of different departments were present at the Auditorium.
Associate professor Mili Rahman and lecturer Nahid Khan Saikat were in charge of coordinating the play.
Masood Ahmed, a postgraduate student of the department directed the play with the help of all the students of the department.
It is one of the most popular comedy plays written by Shakespeare and performed all over the world.
The play is based on the events surrounding the marriage of Duke Theseus of Athens and Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons. The drama depicts the adventures of two lovers and a group of amateur actors.
The drama stars: Jamil, Rima, Saimon, Zahidur, Ayat, Punno, Rohan, Nabab, Rohan Khan, Nancy, Riya, Wahid, Abir, Rahat, Shawon, Shazon, Rasel, Nurnobi, Mukta, Sova, Mithila, Ayesha, Nirjona, Shuktara and many more.
In the play, a young woman named Hermia is wanted by her father to marry a young man named Demetrius. But Hermia loves Lysander. Lysander and Hermia decide to run away and get married.
But that decision was leaked. On the other hand, King Oberon and Queen Titania of the fairy kingdom get drunk in a fight over an Indian boy. Oberon is enraged by Queen Titania's words and plans to give the queen a befitting reply. Oberon asks his servant Puck to bring him a white flower.
A drop of the essence of a flower that wakes a sleeping person from sleep will make him fall in love with whoever he sees. Workers have come to rehearse the play in the forest. Puck had previously magically turned Bottom's head into a donkey's head. Titania falls in love with Donkey Bottom. Meanwhile, Lysander wakes up, forgets Hermia and makes love to Helena. At the behest of the fairy king Oberon, Puck removed the illusion from everyone's sight. Finally, everyone gets
disillusioned. King Theseus and Queen Hippolyta attend the wedding ceremony and together everyone enjoys a labor party play. Such a three-way love clash creates a great comical situation.
Which is the main aspect of the play.
Abdul Kayum, a student of the department, planned the stage of the play. Rezwana Karim Sara did the lighting and script for the play and Nahid Saikat and Reshmi were in the music. Fareya, Sharmishtha and Rafia supervised the dress planning and makeup. Also the students of different semesters of the department were behind the scene.
Regarding the drama, director Masud Ahmad said that the English Department's first full-length production is 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' written by William Shakespeare. An attempt has been
made to incorporate contemporary themes while keeping the importance of the classics intact in the production of this play. 'Comedy' simply exposes the inconsistencies of life to society through humor. The main plot of the play is humor and love. Love is a ridiculous thing without discipline.
People who fall in love easily become different characters in life.
He also said that every character in this play is living in the midst of a dream. This is not the world, but the wanderings of a fairy kingdom seen in a dream. In Bottom's words - 'Love and reason can't live together' means the crew tried to find the answer to the question that arises in the coexistence of love and reason in this play. I hope that the humor created by the complexity of love in this critical and complicated life will cheer up the audience.
