Digital economy growing substantially

Digital economy has been the focus of countries across the globe as its size is growing substantially, $1.26 trillion in Asia Pacific region by 2021, 60 percent of the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) and 4.4 trillion Euros in the EU by 2022.

Keeping this in view, the governments are setting out their national plans, visions and digital strategies for the future.

Speakers made the view at the 7th Annual Sustainable Development Conference 2019 on ‘Green Technology, Renewable Energy and Environmental Protection’ in Bangkok, Thailand.

Laying due emphasize on impact of digital economy on sustainable development, experts further mentioned that digitization is 4.7 times more powerful than the average impact of broadband rollout in boosting economic growth. 

The 3-day Conference is organized by 'Tomorrow People Organization', an internationally recognized non-profit organization with headquarters in Belgrade, Serbia. 

A total of 7 thematic papers were presented in the opening day. Prof. Salim Hiziroglu from United State of America (USA) presented paper on “Sustainable Timber Harvesting Practices” and Dr. Hesham Dinana from Egypt presented the on “The Impact of the Digital Economy on Sustainable Development”. 

In his presentation, Prof. Salim narrated that timber harvesting is extracting and transporting trees or logs from the forestland to a final production site. One of the most important aspects throughout the harvesting operations is maximising the material recovered while keeping the overall cost at minimum level. 

He also opined, “Digitalization and sustainability are two of the most powerful influences in today’s economic landscape and each has generated massive amount of research on how it influences different aspects of peoples live.” 

He described how ICT & The Digital Economy contribute to the achievement of the SDGs and which, out of the 17 SDGs are the ones impacted the most by ICT and lastly, which sectors of the digital economy has the highest impact on SDGs achievement. 

“ICT can pave the way for the age of sustainable development transformation where technology is a key enabler for planetary and human well-being”, Hesham opined. 

Mahesh Bangad from India presented a paper on ‘Light in Vernacular Temples of Pune.” In his research study, he said, numerous temples were built in the city of Pune in the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. These are not of the classical typology and quality, but are rather stylised vernacular adaptations of classical temples. 

In his paper styled “Climate change and trend of natural mountain ecosystems in Morocco”, Prof. Mohammed Sghir Taleb focused on impact of climate change on mountain ecosystem as well as adaptation and mitigation actions developed by Morocco to address the issue.

Jamilah Karim of Malaysia made a presentation on “Occurrence, Determination and Treatment of Bisphenol A in Langat River in Malaysia.” 

In research paper, she focused on how to extract and concentrate BPA, to determine the concentration of BPA and to conduct treatment in removing BPA. In her paper she has tried to find out the occurrence and concentration of Bisphenol A (BPA) in Langat River and also tributary of Langat River as case study.

A fellow member of Institute of Cost & Management Accountants of Bangladesh (ICMAB) and Deputy Managing Director of Prime Bank Limited; Md. Touhidul Alam Khan is participating in the conference as an expert as well as member of Scientific Committee and jury board as well. 

Khan will present a paper on “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Implementation Status in Bangladesh” in the afternoon session on Monday.

Delegates from 38 countries are attending in the conference.
