Bangladesh is set to welcome Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi who will be in Dhaka in a hastily arranged visit on August 6 and 7.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam on Thursday said multiple MoUs and agreements would be signed during the visit.

“The list is yet to be finalized. It can be five to seven including cooperation on the disaster management and cultural exchange fronts,” he told reporters, adding that some would be new and others would be renewed.

He will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday morning after the bilateral meeting with his counterpart Dr AK Abdul Momen who will return to Dhaka from Cambodia on Saturday night after attending the ASEAN Regional Forum meeting.

The Chinese minister will arrive in Dhaka at 11am on Saturday which means that Dr Momen will not be able to receive him.

The State Minister said it has not decided yet who will receive the Chinese Minister.

He, however, said Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader will host a dinner in honour of the Chinese foreign minister on Saturday.

Wang Yi joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in May 1981. He is a member of the 19th CPC Central Committee, State Councilor, and a member of the Leading CPC Members Group of the State Council.

The State Minister said the relationship between Bangladesh and China is “deep and wide” and the two countries will discuss areas of future cooperation.

During the bilateral meeting, the State Minister said Bangladesh will seek a stronger role from the Chinese government for early repatriation of the Rohingyas.

China is also a party of the tripartite mechanism with Bangladesh and Myanmar to resolve the Rohingya crisis. Bangladesh is hosting over 1.1 million Rohingyas who fled ethnic cleansing in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.
