The elections to the Dhaka North and South City corporations are scheduled be held in January next year. The Election Commission (EC) will announce the polls schedule any day after November 18, senior secretary of the EC, Md Alamgir told reporters at a press conference after a full commission meeting held at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city Agargaon area.

However, he said the commission is yet to take decision about holding the election of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) but voting might be held in March or later when a new voter list is available. Alamgir further said the EC will use electronic voting machines (EVMs) during the polls of these two city corporations. The elections would be held based on the existing voter list.

Replying to a query, he said that there is no legal complexity about holding the polls. “We didn’t face any legal difficulties till now. We have already received a letter from the local government ministry to arrange the elections,” he added. EC officials said that elections to these three cities were held on April 28, 2015.

According to city corporation law, the duration of office of the city corporation is five years from the first meeting. And the vote has to be held within 180 days before the expiry date. The tenures of the DNCC and DSCC mayors will expire on May 11 and May 14, 2020 respectively while the tenures of the CCC mayor will expire on August 5, 2020.
