The arrival of Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to the capital bears much appraisal. This is going to open up new pathways to make the Bangladesh-India ties much stronger. However, at the moment the bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India is quite affirming and there is much to be gained on both sides through further enhancing this tie.

News media have published that S Jaishankar believes that the partnership between the two countries has transcended boundaries and has reached a newer level. This is in preparation for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s forthcoming visit to India.

In this regard the two countries have much to benefit in terms of controlling terror, crime and extremism. Moreover, the discussions on bilateral issues have increased connectivity in rail, road and air on the agenda which is sure to be beneficial for both countries. Bangladesh should step-up in this sector as it is a great opportunity to increase trade relations further with India.

The support of India in Rohingyas

getting a safe, sustainable and

speedy return to their  homelands is

in the interest of all three countries

On another note, energy sector as well as development of a mutually acceptable formula on water sharing of common rivers between the two countries is also on the agenda. Hopefully, this will bear the solution of Indo-Bangla river water dispute.

Moreover, the support of India in Rohingyas getting a safe, sustainable and speedy return to their homelands is in the interest of all three countries. India’s assurance of readiness to provide more assistance to the displaced Rohingyas is very much appreciable.

These discussions bear the marks of an initiation of talks which might gain a broader range once Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visits India. There is much to be gained by both countries in this regard. Undoubtedly India has its benefits but Bangladesh will be the better gainer through a stronger tie with India. This will ultimately bear fruitful results in the completion of the long awaited SDGs of Bangladesh.
