Cyclone ‘Bulbul’ destroys 9,455 homesteads in Khulna

The severe Cyclonic storm ‘Bulbul’ totally damaged 9,455 homesteads while 37,820 were partially destroyed at nine upazila in the Khulna, said officials of District Relief and Disaster Management Office, reports BSS.

Khulna District Administration, Mongla Port Authority, Bangladesh Navy, Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) of Mongla West Zone, Fire Service and Civil Defence are working day and night to rehabilitate the affected people of the coastal area. As part of the immediate response for the first time in the district history, more than 2.97 lakh people were successfully evacuated and moved them to 349 cyclone shelters in coastal district as the ‘Bulbul’ hit the region,” said Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Md Helal Hossain.

Officer of District Relief and Management Md. Azizul Haque Zoadder said the severe cyclonic storm ‘Bulbul’ caused a little loss to lives and properties as the district administration took appropriate precautionary measures to cope the disaster. About 2, 97,500 people from the coastal areas were taken to the cyclone shelters before the storm hit the district on November 9, he said.

The storm ‘Bulbul’, however, claimed two lives and injured some people in coastal area, he said, adding that, one died in Dakop and one died in Digolia upazila in the district. The deceased were identified as Promila Mondal, 52, wife of Subash Mondal in Dakop and Md. Alamgir, 35, son of Sharifuddin resident of Katanipara at Digholia upazila in the district.

However, about 1.60-lakh metric tonnes of rice, Taka 8-lakh in cash, 1,900 packets of dry food, were distributed in Koyra, Dakop, Paipgacha, Batiaghata and Rupsa upazila so far, he added. The operations of Mongla port resume yesterday, said Md Makruzzaman, secretary of Mongla Port Authority (MPA).

Around 3,560 volunteers including 10 thousands members of Red Crescent Society,116 medical team with health workers are working at cyclone affected upazila, he said Separate team of Bangladesh Navy, Coast Guard and Fire service and Civil Defence of Khulna has also join rehabilitation activities and distributed huge relief at the coastal upazila.
